Honoring Service Members ECU remembers those who sacrificed and served

East Carolina University honored servicemen and women during annual Veterans Day events. Students, faculty and staff were able to participate in ceremonies, screenings, lectures and more during the week of Nov. 6.

Field of Honor

Monday, Nov. 6, 2017

Flags will be displayed in the mall area on main campus near Joyner Library through the end of November.

The Pirate Veterans Organization raised money for student veteran scholarships during the month of October by selling flags. Each flag purchased honors a current or past service member.

Student Veteran Services placed flags in honor of faculty and staff who indicated they have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Military.

Veterans Film Screening

Student Veteran Services hosted a screening of the film “Almost Sunrise” in partnership with ECU’s Soldier to Scholar bridge program.

The film is about two retired soldiers who are battling the moral injuries of war and the temptations of suicide as they walk across America to confront their demons and discover the power of spiritual healing.

A Belgian malinois named Agbar met with students after a lecture on the history of military working dogs.

Military Working Dogs

Students, faculty and staff attended a lecture about the work of dogs in the military. After the lecture participants met two retired military dogs– Kees, a Dutch shepherd and Agbar, a Belgian malinois.

Graduate Recognition Ceremony

ECU celebrated the accomplishments of student veterans who will graduate at the end of the fall semester.

Students were presented with their veteran graduation cord and challenge coin at the ceremony.

Military Brick Paver Ceremony

Each paver honors individuals who have served in support of national defense, including military service as well as participation with organizations designed to support military efforts, such as the Veterans Administration, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Support the Troops, Wounded Warriors and similar programs.

The paver campaign raises funds for Army and Air Force ROTC student scholarships and is sponsored by the ECU College of Health and Human Performance and Office of Military Programs.

The pavers are located along Memorial Walk outside of Christenbury Memorial Gymnasium.

ECU Athletics Military Appreciation Day

Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017

ECU Athletics welcomed, recognized and honored all five branches of the United States Armed Forces at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium during Military Appreciation Day.

Veterans from World War II, Cold War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the Gulf War participated in the coin toss ceremony before kickoff.
